Andy Brown is a full-time writer, trainer and entrepreneur. A seasoned publisher/entrepreneur with a command of every functional aspect of media and publishing, he is a writer first and foremost, by training and vocation.
With degrees in English and Creative Writing, Andy spent several years as a writing tutor and classroom instructor, teaching composition to college freshmen, before starting his career as a B2B journalist and editor, more than 15 years ago. While working diverse beats, from commercial glass installation to college financial aid to print manufacturing and distribution, he learned to appreciate the relationship between good writing and audience development. For his accomplishments at that time, he was named an American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) Young Leader in 2005.
Determined to understand all aspects of the business, Andy eventually left B2B to sell advertising for a consumer publication. After honing his sales skills, Andy returned to the editorial side of publishing and ran two B2B communications departments before age 30, setting strategy and managing sales, editorial, marketing and production staff. Meanwhile, he found time to launch two side ventures, where he learned the steps a startup takes to develop products, determine product fit and go to market.
Wanting to branch out even further, he took on the role of Marketing and Communications Director for George Mason University’s School of Public Policy, where he developed a content-marketing program that successfully supported recruitment efforts, as well as student and alumni engagement for one of the largest public affairs and policy schools in the nation.
In 2014, Andy realized a lifelong dream to go independent. He founded Methodical Writing to offer writing, editing and training services to clients worldwide. An accomplished and prolific writer, he has produced hundreds of stories for B2B and consumer publications.
He served as a board member for the DC Chapter of the American Marketing Association and continues to be actively engaged in several professional associations. Coming full circle, he was a featured presenter at ASBPE’s 2016 conference, where he spoke about developing effective source cultivation processes.
